The route step by step

1. Errachidia to Erfoud (about 74 km, 50 minutes)

First, leave Errachidia heading south and follow the Ziz Valley, one of the longest palm groves in Morocco. After about 20 km, you can take a short detour to the Meski Blue Spring (Source Bleue de Meski), a pleasant oasis for a first break. Then continue south to Erfoud, a town known for its fossil and marble workshops.

2. Erfoud to Rissani (about 20 minutes)

Next, drive on to Rissani, the historic heart of the Tafilalet region. In addition, Rissani has a busy traditional market, so it is a good place to buy snacks and water before the desert.

3. Rissani to Merzouga (about 40 minutes)

Finally, the road crosses a flat stony desert and the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi slowly appear on the horizon. As a result, the last part of the drive is often the most memorable. Most hotels and desert camps are around the village of Merzouga, so check the exact location of your accommodation before you leave.
